Cranio-Sacral Therapy

What is Cranio-Sacral Therapy?

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST) is a very gentle and non-invasive holistic approach that uses light touch, aimed to relieve tensions in the body to help relieve pain and dysfunction to promote well-being.

Benefits of Cranio-Sacral Therapy

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST) can be used either on its own to promote relaxation and well-being by helping to activate the body and mind towards a restored state of well=being or it can be used in combination with physical therapy to help manage pain and dysfunction.

CST is a gentle way of working with the body using light touch, physiologically it has been suggested that caring touch helps the flow of blood and lymph around the body. Studies have shown that touch can aid to decrease blood pressure and heart rate, soothe nerves and decrease tension, promoting relaxation and a state of well-being which may stimulate the production of the brain’s chemicals that function as natural painkillers reducing pain and producing a state of mind akin to euphoria. This may prevent the likelihood of succumbing to everyday illness and effects of modern-day stress. A balanced state of mind promotes vitality and a greater ability to cope with potentially difficult events.

How it works

The brain is arguably the most complex part of the human body. It allows us to function, as it controls our movements, organs, communication, decisions and emotions.

Occasionally these functions may endure strains and stresses throughout everyday life which may cause body tissues to tighten and distort the cranio-sacral system. These distortions and influences may lead to tension to form around the brain and spinal cord via the central nervous system and potentially other body systems it interacts with preventing the ability to function in a normal healthy way.

According to CST principles, CST works by engaging the body’s central nervous system by means of communicating between the brain and the body via the spinal cord (the epi-centre for the entire functioning of the human body).

By using gentle soft tissue techniques and palpation of the hands, the practitioner evaluates various parts of the body by analysing ease of motion and rhythm of the tissues and their associated structures. When a restriction or distortion has been felt these are then released using various soft tissue techniques. This helps to engage the body’s central nervous system by means of communicating between the brain and the body via the spinal cord by helping to regulate the environment around the brain and spinal cord to promote the body’s ability to self-correct.

How will I feel?

Cranio-Sacral therapy is a unique form of therapy and each and every one of us experiences something entirely unique as it accesses many different levels both physiologically and psychologically due to being a very subtle yet tangible experience, Patients often experience a feeling of sublime relaxation and an improved sense of well-being following treatment.

He went the extra mile and provided me with a thorough and detailed list of imaginative activities to alleviate my ankle problems, one of which is to walk across the swimming pool on tip toes!

He is very knowledgeable about physiotherapy, and shows patience and attention to detail when gaining an understanding of what is wrong. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nick to anyone who wants pain relief.
