Thermo-Auricular Therapy (Ear Candling)

What is Thermo-Auricular Therapy (Ear Candling)?

Thermo-Auricular therapy or ear candling is a non-invasive therapy designed to stimulate healing and well-being on a spiritual level.

Traditionally ear candles were suggested to be used for earache, excess earwax, blocked sinuses, headaches, ear noise (tinnitus) and everyday stresses and nervousness.

What are Ear Candles?

The candles are approximately 20cm long tubes and carefully hand crafted. The candles are generally constructed from natural sources such as organically grown flax, honey extracts, beeswax and therapeutic herbs, including Sage, Chamomile, and St John’s Wort.

How it works

One end of the ear candle is inserted gently into the opening of the ear canal whilst the other end is lit. This produces a slight suction; whilst the movement of the flame creates a vibration of air in the candle to generate a massage-like effect on the ear-drum. A pleasant feeling of warmth is experienced, together with a balancing of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. The entire process is very relaxing and soothing.

The Science

Although the evidence is still controversial and unclear, it is thought that the benefits of ear candling may be down to the ring of fire that is created by the candle.  A possible explanation, is that the flame directs the energy directly towards the body via the ears which may suggest why people experience feelings of less congestion with brighter, lighter energised moods following treatment.

The treatment is always preceded by an assessment of the ears using a otoscope. Ear candling is a safe simple therapy which may benefit almost everyone.
